All national team captains are allowed to vote, and it is a responsibility they must fulfill. However, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner decided not to participate. The reason behind this decision is that the 2016 Euro Champions perceived a lack of necessity to get involved. He believes there is significant favoritism in this award and all others given by FIFA. This decision was not due to any personal issue against Lionel Messi; he could have chosen to vote and exclude Messi from the choices, instead opting for Erling Haaland. However, he chose not to vote because he feels the award has lost its credibility.

The ex-Real Madrid legend abstained from voting due to his disappointment over not being nominated. Cristiano Ronaldo did not withdraw from the votes as a result of feeling snubbed. The Portugal Boss and his vice captain Pepe both omitted Cristiano Ronaldo from their top 3 choices when given the opportunity to vote.
